Project No.(ID) 2: Development and implementation of a production technology for full-function sports nutrition.
Project No 5.1.1.2.i.0/1/22/A/CFLA/004.

SISTEMU INOVACIJAS, Rāmkalni Nordeco and Kamri plan to develop a technology for the production of functional sports nutrition for use during moderate, high and post-exercise recovery.

The research project will lead to the development of technology for the production of functional sports nutrition products. The technology will be evaluated in a real-life environment (TRL7).
The research project will include both industrial research and experimental development activities.

  • Project implementation period: 01.04.2023.- 30.09.2024.
  • Total cost of the research project: € 404 320,00
  • Including co-financing from the Recovery Fund: EUR 283 531,00

Research project overview 01.04.2023. – 30.09.2023.

During the reporting period, in-depth research was carried out on specialised technical and scientific literature, including scientific publications on functional sports nutrition for increased workload and the post-exercise period. During the implementation of the activity, specifications for sports gels for increased workload and post-exercise recovery were developed. The necessary raw materials and quantities have been selected. Potential suppliers of raw materials identified. Preliminary tests for formulation evaluation. In addition, initial formulations for gel production were developed. Experimental batch production.

Research project overview 01.10.2023. – 31.12.2023.

During the reporting period, in cooperation with the project partners, risks in the gel production and filling process were identified, their impact assessed and a mitigation plan developed. On the basis of the developed risk management plan, adjustments were made to the initial technical design of the prototype filling machine. Improvements related to the storage of the finished product prior to packaging – changes in the heating principle of the tank, surface area and position of the mixer paddles, reducing the possibility of bubbles forming during the pre-packaging period. In addition, the positioning of the CIP wash head has been redesigned, eliminating the formation of blind zones or poorly washable areas, reducing the risk of biofilm formation. Redesign of the packing material feed assembly, reducing the risk of microbiological contamination associated with the film feed from the roll to the forming assembly.

Research project overview 01.01.2024. – 30.06.2024.

An algorithm was developed to measure product performance. Potential target groups of product users were identified, data acquisition forms were developed, information for observation participants was established and data acquisition periodicity was determined.Experimental batches were produced, evaluated and adjustments and improvements necessary for the functionality of the prototype were made.

Volunteers were recruited and interviewed before and after using the product. Data extraction and analysis of the data were carried out.
